What is Problem-Based Learning?
Problem-based learning (PBL) is a total approach to education. It is both a curriculum and a process. PBLs consist authentic and relevant problems that require students to:
-
Obtain critical knowledge
-
Use problem solving skills
-
Approach a problem from different perspectives (lenses)
-
Become more self-directed in their learning
-
Develop team collaboration skills
-
Present and discuss ideas with an authentic audience of professionals
For students doing a PBL, the problem is real, current, and relevant. Their solutions offer them choice, creativity, and require them to problem solve with a team.
