Beginning English is designed for students who are new to the United States. These students are in need of acquiring basic English skills. This course is designed to focus on all four domains of language: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. This class is designed as a block class to ensure rapid acceleration of English. Beginning English has a major focus on basic vocabulary development and language production.
Intermediate English is designed for students who are still working to gain proficiency in the four domains of language: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. This course targets specific student needs, including vocabulary development, reading comprehension and listening skills. This course may act as a means to supporting students in their other academic classes.
Advanced English is designed for students who show proficiency in speaking English and still need additional support in reading and writing the language. This course follows some of the same standards as language arts classes and include a specific emphasis on reading and writing. This course is divided into two sections: Advanced English 1 is for 9th and 10th graders. Advanced English 2 is for 11th and 12th graders.
Transition English is the most advanced level of ESL offered at NHS. This class is designed to prepare students to be successful in high school language arts classes. This course follows the same standards that language arts classes do and include a specific emphasis on language acquisition. This course is divided into two sections: Transition English 1 is for 9th and 10th graders. Transition English 2 is for 11th and 12th graders.
