Northglenn counselor wins Counselor of the Month

Northglenn counselor wins Counselor of the Month

Congratulations to Michael Stelling from Northglenn High School for being named the Counselor of the Month for the month of April by the Colorado Council on High School and College Relations! The Colorado Council for High School and College Relations seeks to recognize high school counselors who are going above and beyond and who warrant recognition. We are proud of this work that you do to support students with social/emotional needs, college and career goals, and crisis response.

Michael Stelling is now up for Counselor of the Year and the $1,000 award. Michael was selected by his peers and his nomination had this statement from Rae Ann Armijo:

Michael has been the backbone of Northglenn High School since I was hired. He welcomed me with Northglenn gear, gave me the ins and outs of the school and our department, and is consistently making connections with teachers. Michael is the counselor who will be the first one in and the last one to leave. He helps out with our STEM program, the state's Workforce Development Council, our School Accountability Committee, 8th grade night for our students, financial aid presentations for our high school students, and so much more. On top of his daily tasks, he is always looking for ways to support our students, and appreciate our staff. He reaches out to the state for opportunities - most recently working on an MOU for our whole Adams 12 district to bring Path4Ward to our students to provide college tuition support for our early grads. He is always striving to make our interactions with students and families more memorable and more interactive rather than just presentations. He also serves on our school and district crisis teams to support our school and other schools with tough situations.

On a personal level, Michael is a trusted, respected, and amazing person. He always makes sure his colleagues feel special and are celebrated for birthdays. He talks with teachers just to check in and make sure they are feeling good. He is a great husband and dad - driving his kids over an hour for birthday parties, taking time to coach dance or gymnastics, and just stepping up and being there for his family. He is truly well-rounded and deserves the recognition of everything he is. I whole-heartedly recommend him to receive this award.
