Senior Year Timeline
This timeline is a general overview of what to expect during your senior year and to give you an idea of what you can do to prepare for your next steps after high school. The Northglenn Counseling Website is a resource to find more information about universities, community colleges, trade school, scholarships, military, jobs, internships and more.

August
|
Attend your senior meeting with your counselor before school starts to discuss graduation requirements, remaining credits, and post high school options.

Visit the websites of colleges/universities that you might be interested in. Take a virtual tour online, or schedule a free campus tour.
|
|
Make a list of all colleges/universities that you are interested in. Your list can include:
2 safe schools (you know that you will get accepted and they are on the more affordable side)
2 target schools (you might have to put a little more effort into your application and scholarships)
1 reach school (you will have to turn in an amazing application and work really hard on scholarships)

Prospective college athletes register with the NCAA Eligibility Center.
|
|
Sign up online for an SAT retake if you want to try and improve your score. If you cannot afford to sign up for a retake, talk to your counselor about a fee waiver. October SAT - deadline is early September.
Access Khan Academy which is the official SAT prep partner of the College Board, and it offers everything you need to get test-day ready — 100% FREE.

September

Start researching specific admission requirements to the colleges/universities you are interested in. Know application deadlines for the schools and scholarships you wish to apply to. Admission requirements to each school vary and it is essential to meet all deadlines!

Begin searching for scholarships. Here is the link to the scholarships section on our website. Search for Colorado, local and national scholarships.
|
|
Identify 3-5 adults who could write a strong letter of recommendation for you. Letters of recommendation are often required for college AND scholarship applications. Choose teachers, counselors, administrators, coaches, employers, or other non-family adults who will be able to give specific examples of your great academic or social skills.

College/University applications are filled out online with the Common App. Make an account with Common App and sync it with SchooLinks (dashboard).
|
|
Community College applications can be found directly on their websites and are often rolling admissions, meaning they accept applications on a continuous basis. This allows for flexibility as applicants can apply throughout the year without strict deadlines. However, it is still advisable to apply early, as spaces may become limited as the term progresses.

For the 2026 academic school year, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will be available ideally in October 2025. Use this link to access FAFSA or use CASFA if you do not have a social security number.

Colorado Free Application Days: October 7-9, 2025
All 32 public colleges and universities in Colorado and several private institutions will waive their application fees, making it free for anyone to submit an application.

Early Decision and Early Action application deadlines are typically November 1 or November 15, depending on the school.

Make sure to keep your grades up! Colleges will look closely at your senior grades. Monitor these through Infinite Campus often.

|
Fall ICAP lesson in English classes. Counselors will give a lesson on financial aid including: loans, grants, work study and scholarships.

Apply for College Opportunity Fund (COF) Stipend
The College Opportunity Fund program provides a stipend for in-state students going to college in Colorado. To receive this funding, a student must create a COF account and must also authorize the use of the stipend at their respective institution.

Let your counselor know the outcome of your college applications and scholarship applications as you find out. Counselors will use this information for the graduation ceremony.

Make final college decisions and request final transcript in SchooLinks.

All high school students in Colorado must have an ICAP. All information you complete in SchooLinks is part of the ICAP. You must complete all tasks assigned to you in SchooLinks in order to be cleared for the graduation ceremony.
