Seal of Biliteracy

The State of Colorado passed Senate Bill 17-123, enabling school districts to award a diploma endorsement in biliteracy to any graduate who attains proficiency in English and another language. Earning the seal of biliteracy recognizes students for their dedication to learning multiple languages and cultures.
Why we have the Colorado Seal of Biliteracy:
- To encourage and honor students who study languages
- To honor the diversity that exists within Adams 12 Five Star Schools
- To prepare students with the skills they need to excel and thrive in a global community
Value and benefits of earning the Seal of Biliteracy:
- To showcase students' language proficiency to colleges, universities and employers.
- Honor cords worn at graduation.
Increasingly, colleges and employers are seeking graduates who are able to speak, read and write in multiple languages. We launched the Adams 12 Seal of Biliteracy to encourage students to maintain their heritage languages while learning English, as well as to encourage English-speaking students to learn additional languages. We have aligned our bilingual programs to the requirements of the Seal in order to increase the number of students who graduate fully bilingual.
Who can earn the Seal? Is it just for English learners or Spanish speakers?
The seal is for ALL students who demonstrate mastery in multiple languages using the approved criteria, not just English learners or Spanish speakers. Come see Mrs. Hufford in Room 223 or email kim.hufford@adams12.org
